An estimated nine out of ten children suffer from one or more symptoms related
to Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB). – JAOS, Bergersen / Stevens
These children experience a wide range of debilitating
SDB- related health disorders, such as:
- Lower IQ
- Chronic Allergies
- Aggressive Behavior
- Mouth Breathing
- Swollen Adenoids & Tonsils
- Daytime Drowsiness
- Crooked Teeth
- Restless Sleep
- Dark Circles Under the Eyes
- Frequent Headaches
- Arrested Growth
- Low Grades in Math, Science, & Spelling
The HealthyStart® System is an oral appliance therapy that promotes natural
growth and development, which addresses the root causes of SDB. Research
has shown that SDB-induced oxygen deprivation is a major contributing factor to
the childhood health disorders shown above.
The HealthyStart® System has been specifically designed to promote the
proper growth and development of the jaw and airway to optimize airflow and
promote proper nasal breathing while straightening your child’s teeth. As these
areas develop many of the symptoms of Sleep Disordered Breathing disappear.
When kids can breathe properly, they can begin to learn, grow, and blossom
into their true genetic potential … just as nature intended.
Many kids with the above health disorders are being “treated” with powerful
drugs without evaluating a possible root cause. Our office can evaluate your
child and indicate if there is a breathing and sleeping issue. Please take the
sleep and speech questionnaire to make an initial evaluation of your child.
Healthy Start not only addresses the root cause of Sleep Disorder Breathing it
simultaneously straightens your child’s teeth without braces. Best of all, when
treatment begins early, the perfect smiles that the HealthyStart® Appliance
System creates are less likely to relapse!
HealthyStart® creates healthier, happier kids who can breathe. Rarely has
there ever been a single appliance or system with the power to impact your
child’s health in so many positive ways. As a parent, you owe it to your child to
give them every chance to succeed. Call today for more information on how to
help children achieve their full potential.
Every Child Deserves a Healthy Start!
HealthyStart® Appliances are FDA Cleared, BPA, Silicone and Latex Free, ISO
Certified, and a Health Canada Class II Medical-Grade Device.
Treatment with the HealthyStart® Appliance System promotes natural growth
and development and is safe and effective. HealthyStart® is non-surgical, non-
pharmaceutical, pain-free and non-invasive therapy, is soft, comfortable and
worn at night (or as directed) to assist parents who struggle with children
affected by Sleep-Related Breathing Disorder, a restricted airway and crowded
or crooked teeth.
Growth & Development And Sleep Disordered Breathing
Common Orthodontic Conditions and Their Effects on Sleep Disordered Breathing
Retruded mandible and tongue increases vertical facial growth-lowers tongue & narrows palate.
Mandibular Vertical Growth
Lower tongue and narrows palate, encourages mouth breathing.
Nighttime Mouth Breathing
Allows tongue to close oropharynx and to narrow upper arch – restricts nasal Airway-may lower oxygenation of blood and affect sleep patterns.
Daytime Mouth Breathing
Intensifies habits – same as above.
Influences position of mandible and oropharyngeal restriction by tongue.
Tends to restrict forward movement of mandible and tongue.
Postero-superior displacement increases retruded tongue position and obstruction of oropharynx. TMD has less growth of mandible and face-increases oropharyngeal restriction.
Crowded teeth have narrower arches and can restrict nasal airflow.
Encourages upper anterior and posterior arch widths-increasing the width by 5 mm (and 4 mm) (upper and lower).
Is related to active leg movement in abnormal sleep-justifies correcting sleep problems to correct harmful grinding.
Functional cross-bite has a narrow palate and decreases normal nasal airflow.
Lingually-Inclined Upper Incisors
Restricts mandibular forward growth and increases oropharyngeal narrowing.
Causes narrow palate and restricts nasal airflow-also restricts natural mandibular advancement.
Abnormal Tongue Position
Narrows palate and encourage mouth breathing.
Encourages abnormal swallowing and abnormal tongue position.
Discourages nasal breathing.
Lisp indicative of improper tongue function and often has open bite with narrow palate.
Indicative of mandibular retrusion and nighttime mouth breathing
Class II Molar Relation
Mandible in retruded position
Prolonged Nipple Bottle & Pacifier Use
Encourages oral habits to narrow the palate and abnormal swallowing.
Posterior Lateral Tongue Thrust
Deepens bite with retrusive mandible
Normal mandibular growth encourages horizontal vector of growth and discourages excess vertical increases in face
Without condylar growth, horizontal progression is restricted and encourages vertical changes in maxilla and allows for excessive tooth eruption
